I had a '16 328d xDrive whose only disappointment was the standard speakers. Not what one should expect from a $50,000+ car. Spent around $3000 for all the Bavsound bits and pieces and installation to little effect. Waste of money. Fast forward a few years, got a '17 328d xDrive wagon with the H-K system.

The rear luggage area panels are the easiest place to fit extra speakers. Remove those two elastic straps and there’s a hole and a dip in the carbon panels which suits a speaker magnet shape.
Currently in my 340i I have the Harman Kardon surround system which I think is 1 step up from the standard 12 speaker Harman. I also noticed that the HiFi has 2 powerful subwoofers located in the central area of the cabin whereas the Harman Kardon only has 1 subwoofer located in the trunk. Realistically, I just want the very best bass and sound
The HK system is MUCH better. The Alpine upgrade isn't worth it IMO and if I was to order I would either get the HK or leave the base speakers and upgrade some nice aftermarket ones. For the cost the HK system is cheaper than going base and adding an aftermarket equivalent though.

I wasn't able to hear it in a 5 before I bought my car but opted for the B&W because I had a Burmester system in my previous Mercedes and liked that a lot. The dealer promised a significant difference and I was swayed on that advice. Yes it's a nice system - especially if you listen to quality recordings, but I wouldn't consider it worth the cost.
