The Toyota Yaris Cross is a mix of two things the Japanese car maker does well – small hybrid cars and SUVs – so in theory it should be good.
It shares no design elements with the Yaris hatch on which it is based, and that’s a good thing considering the Yaris isn’t quite a looker anyway. Of the pair, the Juke has a sleeker and tauter stance, paired with larger 19-inch wheels (ST-L and Ti grades) compared to the Yaris Cross’ 18-inch items (Urban model).
It does quite a lot of work in this vehicle to maximise the outputs from the engine and it does so with little drama. Like the rest of the Yaris range, this Cross GX also has the usual drive modes, which are Eco, Normal, and Power. Eco mode adds a good level of resistance to the throttle, and blunts the engine a bit.
Toyota claims 5.4L/100km and we returned an average reading of 6.9L/100km. As we've previously reported, the fuel economy is good. It's not outstanding. The Toyota Yaris Cross is backed by a five Enter, the Yaris Cross. Oh, what a difference ground clearance and the word Cross makes.
